I have two work days left and then I am officially on unpaid leave until I begin work again in November. As you can see on the Picture below, everything is ready, the JMT hike starts on the 15th of august. I arrive at the Yosemite Valley this coming sunday (by public transport, really that can’t be worse than the trains in England right?) I have enough days to get used to back to back hiking, to the elevation and hopefully be ready for the hike itself. If something doesn’t work out gear wise then there might be time to change and if not, well I just have to suck it up.
All paperwork is done. The ESTA form is up to date and all bookings/ reservations (just for the first part) are printed and saved as a pdf. My insurance are organised and should cover everything, and I really really hope that I won’t have to use any of them. So all in all I am prepared and what ever happens, happens.
About the gear below, I won’t list it in detail because it will change at some point, but also for the JMT some essential gear gets replaced by shared group gear.
But just for the ones that what to know, the items below that get into my backpack are about 8kg that are about 17.6lbs. It’s not lightweight but I tried to shed as much as I could, but most weight comes from the camera, the solar charger, kindle and notebook. Not to mention the weight of the bear canister.
But all that beside, I look forward to the experience, the places I get to see and the people I will meet. I think no matter what, it will be great. It’s the second time I will spend an extended time in a different country and the last time was for a couple of year in England and I really loved the time there and the people I met and just because of that, I think the three-month spend in the US will be fantastic.
